The Southeast Community Development Corporation (SCDC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing educational and technological equity in Southeast Los Angeles County.

This summer, SCDC will host STEM-focused technology camps at two locations: the SCDC Bell Gardens HQ and the Bell Tech Center. These camps will offer engaging, hands-on classes in subjects such as coding, electronics, robotics, 3D printing, and other emerging technologies based on community interest.

Summer Tech Camp Assistant Instructor

Position Summary

SCDC is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Summer Tech Camp Assistant Instructor to support our Lead Instructor in delivering engaging, hands-on STEAM programming for middle and high school students. In this role, you will contribute to a positive and inclusive learning environment while also participating in community outreach initiatives to drive camp awareness and enrollment. This is a temporary, part-time position well-suited for individuals who are passionate about youth development, technology, and making a meaningful impact in their community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Lead Instructor in facilitating daily classes, hands-on activities, and project-based learning experiences.
  • Support curriculum preparation, including gathering materials, organizing workspaces, and setting up equipment prior to each session.
  • Monitor and document student progress, participation, and engagement throughout each camp session.
  • Engage with students in grades 7–12 in a respectful, culturally responsive, and supportive manner that fosters confidence and curiosity.
  • Participate in community outreach efforts, including promoting the camp schedule and supporting student recruitment initiatives.
  • Arrive at least 30 minutes before class begins; assist with post-class cleanup, including materials organization, surface cleaning, and waste removal.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Lead Instructor or program leadership.
Required Qualifications
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish (written and verbal).
  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and reliable personal transportation.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM-related field (e.g., Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering) or current enrollment in a related degree program; equivalent professional experience will also be considered.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in one or more of the following: coding (Java, HTML/CSS), Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Machine Learning, Cybersecurity, Game Design, Robotics, or Rube Goldberg engineering.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in teaching, tutoring, or instructional support roles.
  • Prior experience with community outreach, program promotion, or youth recruitment is strongly preferred.

What You Could Do:

  • Help provide personalized guidance to students who need extra support with STEM concepts and skills.
  • Challenge advanced or gifted students with enrichment activities.
  • Support children who need extra help to complete tasks.
    Aiding teachers in planning learning activities and maintaining records.
  • Mentor our FIRST LEGO League and FIRST Tech Challenge robotics teams in building and coding their robots for competition.
